Refining and Manufacturing of Coconut Oil and Products
Copra (dried sections of the white meaty inner lining of the coconut palm) is the principal commercial product derived from the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and is used primarily as a source of coconut oil.
The ripe coconuts are split and laid out to dry in the sun after which the meat is scraped out and dried once more on drying channels at the factory.
The oil is removed from the dried copra by means of mechanical extraction and no
chemicals are used in this process. The remaining residue is utilized to feed livestock.
The raw coconut oil (crude coconut oil) is subsequently refined into different grades for
resale to the various industries.
Coconut Oil is one of the most stable oils and is highly resistant to rancidity
due to its high saturated fat content.
Coconut Oil is a common ingredient in the making of ice-creams, margarines, chocolate, vegetable shortenings, salad oils and confections.
It is also used in the manufacture of soaps, detergents and shampoos because it contains high levels of lauric acid, an ingredient that gives soap a quick-lathering property. Another big market is in the production of cosmetics.
It can also be added to glues, epoxies and lacquers to provide flexibility. Coconut Oil is an important component of many industrial lubricants for example in the cold rolling of steel strip.
